Fuel Prices Too Much For You

In times when gas and oil prices are increasing people are looking for an alternative source of heat. Could solid fuel be the answer? You don't even need a brick chimney these days, it can be done with twin wall flue. Even in smokeless zones you can still run a full heating system from solid fuel and wood. One of the greatest advantages with solid fuel is you only use what you can afford. You can ask yourself do i really need my heating on or will a jumper surfice. Many people have access to free wood or know someone who can ge them some. Tree surgeons are always looking for someone to take wood off their hands, they have to pay to dispose of it.

Burning Wood

Burning Wood

Burning wood is a sustainable way to heat your home. You can make it environmentally friendly by burning the right logs at the right time. When you burn a log it needs to be seasoned properly or it will not burn well.

To season most wood it needs to be left out to the elements for 18 months to 2 years. Then it needs to be stacked where the wind can still get at it but not not the rain so it dries out. Then it is ready for burning and should not give any smoke immisions out of the chimney. Different woods need to be seasoned for different lenghts of time.

Ash is considered to be the best firewood as it doesn't need seasoning and can be burnt as soon as it has been felled.

Oak
burns slowly and gives off a lot of heat but does not have a large flame. It needs to be seasoned for at least 2 years to burn well and can sometimes stay in overnight if banked up.

Installing your own fire

The installation of a wood or multifuel stove MUST be installed by a HETAS registered engineer or you will need to contact the building inspector at your local council. If it is fitted by a HETAS registered engineer there is no need to contact the building inspector as the engineer can sign it off. If it is fitted by a non registered installer the building inspector needs to come before your closure plate goes up and after it has been finished. He will need a copy of the installation instructions and can charge up to £300.00

Failure to do any of the above invalidates your guarantee with the manufacturer and your household insurance should you have a fire.
